2011 Cedarmore Farm CSA

Hello Again! Here at Cedarmore farm we are busy getting ready for this year’s CSA. We have made a few changes for 2011. We have extended both the Spring and Fall seasons by 2 weeks each. We have added a “surprise canned good” share which gives you 1 pint jar per week of our home canned goods to go along with your produce share. Possibilities include: ketchup, tomato juice, tomato chunks, pizza sauce, pickled beets, pickled sweet peppers, sweet or hot pepper butter, bread & butter, dill or mustard pickles, strawberry, blackberry or red raspberry jam, peach or pear butter and more! We are pleased to let you know that we have been able to reduce the delivery fee to the Cincinnati area from $4.00 per week to $3.00 per week. We have also added pick up locations in Loveland, Mason and Anderson.
We are constantly striving to build the healthiest soils possible to increase the nutrient content of your produce. This also has the added benefit of producing stronger, healthier plants. We are hoping that this year will be an even greater year for growing than last year. We want to thank all of last year’s CSA members and also all of those who have already signed up for 2011. If you are new to Cedarmore farm and would like more information please e-mail us at cedarmorefarm@tdisp.com
Thank You!

Farm News and Recipes

Hi. We wanted to let everyone know what’s been happening here at the farm. We’ve been busy working in the greenhouse and plowing fields. We have had some really beautiful weather this past week, and today we had a few thunderstorms. With the ground well warmed by the sun, these rains will help to bring up things we’ve been planting this week.
We have really been at it in the fields planting potatoes, red beets, carrots, along with more greens, onions, radishes, broccoli, kale, and collards. In the greenhouse we are nurturing all we have growing including quite a few tomato plants ,and this past few days we have been working with some melon plants that we are going to be putting in the fields soon. So far it has been an excellent growing season!

Spring Greetings!

Spring greeting from Cedarmore farm! We are very excited to let you know that for the last month we have been harvesting maple sap to cook down into maple syrup and we have had a very productive year for it. There are no added ingredients, just pure maple sap boiled down into a maple syrup. It’s delicious, it’s sweet and it’s about as organic as organic gets. We are glad to announce that we will be selling pure maple syrup to our customers as soon as the CSA season starts. We have really been enjoying the nice weather we have had over this last few weeks. We have a lot of plants growing in the greenhouse including tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, chard, kale, lettuce, broccoli, cabbage , and collards. It seems we are continually starting more, and we have also been hitching up the horses and getting going on plowing the fields for the summer crops. We have sold out of Spring shares this year, but we do still have some summer shares left. Something new this year is our Fall share running for 8 weeks which will include Broccoli, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Chard, Lettuce, Onions, Radishes, Carrots, Squash (Sweet Dumpling, Acorn, Butternut)
Garlic, Potatoes, Red Beets, Kale, Chinese Cabbage, Sweet Potatoes
We will also be selling Winter shares which will be a 1 time pick up of vegetables that will keep for a while including : Onions, Garlic, Potatoes, Sweet Potatoes, Squash (Sweet Dumpling, Acorn, Butternut), Cabbage, Chinese Cabbage, Carrots

We have a recipe to share that goes great with the fresh maple syrup:

2010 — hello and good-bye

hello 2010! andy and lizzie are gearing up for a full csa season. if you have joined in previous years, you’ll be receiving an updated sign-up sheet in the mail any day now. if you haven’t joined before but want to join now, email andy’s friend rue at cedarmorefarm at tdisp dot com; give rue your name and contact information, and he’ll put you in touch with andy.

but aren’t you just dying to know what’s new for 2010? here’s the rundown:

  • slightly shorter seasons, with a lower cost to you
  • a “fresh egg share” that lets you pay up front to receive one dozen eggs (from organically-fed, free-range chickens) in your box each week
  • widely expanded delivery sites, including hillsboro, peebles, batavia, eastgate, west union, and of course cincinnati
  • expanded pick-up days, with deliveries made on tuesdays and on fridays

andy has hired a driver for the csa which is making all these new delivery sites possible. a modest fee (a few dollars a week) is added to your share total to help cover delivery costs. as always, you can pick up your share at the farm if you prefer, with no delivery charge added.

to date andy and lizzie are planning on a spring share, a summer share, and a combined spring/summer share. a fall/winter storage share is in the works as well; look for news about this later this spring or early summer.

and now, for the good-bye: after two great seasons with cedarmore, we find ourselves returning to the twin cities (and in need of a new csa!). we will miss the hershbergers, our visits to the farm, lizzie’s amazing canned and baked goods, and of course the abundance of healthy, organically-raised goodness that has come to our house from their farm over the months.

we’ll leave this blog up until march 1, 2010, so feel free to leave questions or comments until then. after that, please contact rue or send snail-mail directly to andy at the farm.

winter shares are here!

our porch o’erfloweth with autumnal bounty.  we have shares for white, norton, yoder, larosa, renggli, bruins, bergan, and araya. c’mon and pick up yer goodies! directions for how many of which boxes and bags go to each of you are on the porch. please pay attention and take the right stuff (and the right amount of stuff) since we can’t catch up with you next week to make it right.
